    What is life insurance?

A life insurance policy allows you to provide a financial safety net for your loved ones in case you pass away. By paying regular premiums, your beneficiaries can receive a designated sum, known as a death benefit. A death benefit can be used however they like — for funeral services, paying off outstanding debt, and even everyday expenses.

Can you increase your life insurance coverage later?

It depends on the type of life insurance policy and its terms. You may be able to increase coverage by adding a rider, buying a new policy, increasing the death benefit with a universal or whole life policy, or enrolling in group life coverage through an employer. In some states, we offer a "flexible term" policy via Progressive Life Insurance Company — it allows you to adjust your coverage amount (up or down) without having to re-apply or get a new policy.† Coverage options range from $50,000 to $1 million.

Life insurance is more affordable than you think

Young adults between the ages of 18 and 30 believe a 20-year, $250,000 term life insurance policy is 10 to 12 times more expensive than it really is, according to LIMRA's 2025 Insurance Barometer study. Life insurance is especially affordable for young, healthy adults. Learn more about how much life insurance costs, including real examples of monthly premiums for different age groups.
